Statement of the 2009 Northeast Asian Women’s Peace Conference

“Negotiating Regional Peace, Reconciliation, and Cooperation”

October 6th~8th, 2009, Washington D.C. USA

We, the women of the Northeast Asia Women’s Peace Conference, concerned about the looming threats of military conflict and war in Northeast Asia, strongly support President Barack Obama’s initiative to secure a “nuclear weapons free world.” We are greatly encouraged by recent developments in proposed bilateral and multilateral talks to resolve nuclear insecurity in Northeast Asia.

We believe it is of vital importance to include the voice and experience of women in this process to ensure an outcome that respects the needs of all people.

We support :

1.  A comprehensive approach to peace in Northeast Asia that includes elements such as the denuclearization of North Korea, a peace treaty, and normalization of the US-North Korea relations.

2. United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 which calls for the participation of women in diplomatic

We urge :

* Representation of women, in formal negotiations, working groups, and as observers to multilateral negotiations in relation to Northeast Asia.

* Women’s track II initiatives and NGO activities in support of the official Six Party Talks.

* Assurance that international programs delivering aid to the DPRK recruit well qualified female staff to ensure the equal participation of women in program planning and management.

We urge concerned parties and individuals to take action in support of these recommendations.  This action should include steps that require the State Department to report to Congress on their progress.
