‘2012 동북아여성평화회의’에 참가하신 각국의 여성 대표 여러분, 환영합니다. 그리고 이번 회의를 준비하고 주관하시는 이선종, 정현백 추진위원장님, 또 하나의 중대한 국제회의를 개최하시게 된 것을 축하드립니다.
핵 없는, 평화롭고 지속가능한 세상을 염원하는 한 사람으로서, 또 이 회의를 위해 작은 후원을 한 한국여성재단의 대표로서 저는 이번 회의의 심각성과 중요성에 공감을 합니다.
2011년 3월 11일 일본 동북지역의 대지진과 쓰나미로 온 세계가 충격과 슬픔과 고통에 휩싸였었습니다. 연이어 전해진 후쿠시마 원전사고 소식은 그 보다 더욱 더 큰 충격이었습니다. 그 뒤, 원전사고로 인한 위험에 대해 현대 과학과 최첨단 기술과 정치권력, 어느 것도 신뢰할 만 한 설명과 구체적 대안을 내놓지 못한 채 1년이 지났습니다. 그동안, 일본의 시민들, 특히 청년들, 그리고 아이들의 엄마들이 시작한 ‘탈원전운동’이 한국과 전 세계로 확산되고 있습니다. 이제 세계시민 대다수가 “안전한 원전이라면 아무런 문제가 없다”는 무책임한 입장에 동의하는 대신 “원전은 근본적으로 위험하다”는 인식을 공유하며, 탈원전이 우리 모두에게 나와 내가 사랑하는 사람들의 생존권 보호와 지속가능한 세상을 위한 필수 조건의 하나라고 굳게 믿게 되었습니다.
이번 회의 주제는 이 자리에 오신 분들보다 훨씬 더 많은 분들이 지대한 관심을 모으는 주제입니다. 회의 참가자 여러분들이, 에너지원으로서의 핵뿐만 아니라, 평화를 위협하는 핵 문제의 해결방안에 대해 여성의 관점과 감성, 도전정신과 지혜에 기초한 토론을 통해 세상에 변화를 가져오는 데에 중요한 기여를 할 수 있게 되기를 기대하고, 또 응원하겠습니다. 감사합니다.

To the women representing all of the countries who are participating in 2012 NEAWPC I welcome you with all my heart.
Seonjong Lee and Hyun-back Chung, chairpersons of the NEAWPC promotion committee, who have prepared and are conducting this conference. I want to congratulate you on the opening of another important international conference.
As someone who longs for a peaceful and sustainable world without nuclear weapons,and as a representative of the Korea Foundation for Women (KFW) that is giving some support to this conference, I understand the seriousness and importance of this conference.
The entire world felt shock, sorrow, and pain whenthe heavy earthquake and Tsunami shook northeast Japan on March 11, 2011. I was greatly affected by the continuous news about the Fukushima nuclear accident. A year has passed, and neither scientists nor our political leaders have been able to suggest any reasonable explanation for the danger caused by the nuclear accident, or suggest any detailed alternatives. The ‘Anti-nuclear Movement’started by Japanese citizens, particularly youth and mothers, has spread to Korea and acrossthe world. Most citizens of the world share the perception that 'nuclear power is basically dangerous' rather than agreeing with the irresponsible premise that ‘safe nuclear power is okay.’ They also believe firmly that ‘no nuclear power' is arequirement to protect our beloved people's right to live and to maintain a sustainable world.
The topic of this conference is one that has attracted the keen attention of many more people than just the participants in this conference. I expect and hope that participants will make an important contribution to bringing change in the world through discussions based on women's perspectives, sensitivity, dedication, and wisdom to find the solutions to nuclear problems.

2012 서울 동북아여성평화회의의 성공적인 개최를 진심으로 축하드립니다.
무장갈등 예방을 위한 글로벌 파트너십(이하 GPPAC) 동북아지역위원회 지역대표 자리를 빌어, 매우 뜻깊은 자리에 참여하게 되어 영광입니다. 또한 동북아시아의 핵 없고 평화로운 지속 가능한 미래를 만들어 가기 위한 노력에 도움이 되어 기쁩니다.
2003년 코피 아난 유엔 사무총장의 요청에 의해 형성된 GPPAC는 무장갈등 예방과 평화구축을 위한 국제적 합의를 이끌어 나가는 국제시민사회연대 네트워크입니다. 설립 이후 GPPAC 동북아지역위원회는 시민단체 간의 대화를 독려하고 냉전 체제의 유산인 한반도 분단을 극복하기 위해 힘써 왔습니다. 이 과정에서 여성의 역할은 매우 중요합니다. 따라서 GPPAC 네트워크는 모든 지역의 평화와 안전을 위해 여성의 적극적인 우선적 참여를 권장합니다.
이번 회의는 세계 여성의 날과 3·11 동일본 대지진과 쓰나미, 일본 후쿠시마 원전 사고 참사 1주년과 가까운 날에 개최되어 더욱 의미가 깊습니다. 작년 사고로 수십만 명 사람들의 평화로운 삶이 피해를 입었고, 높은 수치의 위험한 방사능은 많은 사람들의 목숨을 위협하고 있습니다. 특히 임산부를 비롯하여 아이들과 여성들에게 큰 영향을 미쳤습니다. 지난 해의 사고를 통해 국제 사회는 지속되고 있는 상황을 주시하고, 미래 사회의 주인공이 될 아이들을 보호하는 데 앞장 서야 할 중요한 시기입니다.
우리는 이번 동북아여성평화회의를 계기로 시민들이 지속가능한 사회로 나아가기 위해 함께 노력할 것을 확신하며, 우리 아이들이 생명과 동북아시아 사회간 공존을 존중할 수 있도록 더 나은 세상을 만들어 나가는 것에 시민들이 동참할 것을 굳게 믿습니다.
오늘 회의에서 좋은 논의들이 진행되기를 기대합니다.

Northeast Asia Regional Representative, Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC)
Congratulations for the successful hosting of the 2012 Northeast Asia Women's Peace Conference in Seoul!
As Regional Representative for the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC) in Northeas Asia, I am honoured to be involved and supporting this initiative, a crucial contribution to efforts to build a nuclear-free, peaceful and more sustainable future for Northeast Asia.
GPPAC is a global civil society-led network which seeks to build an international consensus on peacebuilding and the prevention of violent conflict, established in 2003 in response to a call made by then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Since then, GPPAC Northeast Asia has been working to bring together citizen's groups to promote dialogue and work together to overcome the remnant Cold War divisions in this region. The role of women is an important part of this process, and GPPAC strongly emphasises the priority of women’s full participation in all areas of peace and security.
This conference takes place at the significant moment of being close to both the International Women's Day and the first anniversary of the March 11 tragedy of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami and subsequent nuclear disaster. These incidents have impacted the peaceful lives of hundreds of thousands of people, and the dangerously high levels of radiation still threaten the lives of a huge population. The people most affected by this are children and women, especially pregnant women. This is an important time for the international community to urgently take heed of the ongoing situation of these women, and come together to protect the children who are the future of society.
We are certain that the Northeast Asia Women's Peace Conference will be an important moment for citizens to join together to move towards a sustainable society, creating for our children a better world on the basis of mutual respect for life and coexistence between communities in Northeast Asia.
We wish the conference the greatest success.
